Get Started in Freelance Photography

If you want to get started in photography then you should consider starting out as a freelance photographer on a part-time basis first. I'll tell you why.

Some people think that the best way to get started is to go out and get a degree in photography, or even to work as a photographer's assistant, but that is not always the best way to go. While both of those could be useful, they are not necessary steps on the way to being a successful freelance photographer.

In fact, many of the most successful photographers are self-taught. They started with a passion for photography and went on to develop their own style and experience taking good photographs in their favorite niches. And all that probably happened before the money ever started rolling in.

There is good money in photography, and the lifestyle of being a freelancer is a great one, but the reality is it will probably take some time to build up your freelance photography business to the point you can rely on it financially.

If you really want to have a photography career, then consider starting it on a part-time basis, while you are still working in some other job that pays the bills and hopefully, that you enjoy. Let your job provide the financial security while you develop your photography skills and experience in your spare time.

If you really want to do this, then you will spend all your spare time learning how to be a better photographer, and eventually you find that your photography has become good enough for you to make the transition to do your freelance photography full-time.

Now this is not to say you will not earn any income from your part-time photography. Quite the opposite, in fact. While you are developing your skills as a photographer in your spare time you should also be actively trying to sell your photos and build your income.

There are many ways that you can find freelance photography assignments and you can also sell your photos online.
